My favorite women are always a bit of a contradiction.
My best friend was a cheer leader in high school and has a deep, passionate love affair with fashion. She is also a talented nuclear engineer.
Another favorite lady of mine is a brilliant MIT educated mechanical engineer I used to work with. In her spare time, she earned a black belt and made a name for herself in power lifting.
So I was a bit amused when I saw this headline - 'Combat Barbie' is both beauty & soldier
The reigning Miss England is Lance Cpl. Hodge of the British Army.
Apparently, she's a pretty good solder. She just looks damn good doing it.
I just love a girl who keeps the stereotypes on their toes.

Being a sociologist by education I love that we study stereotypes and when we stand them on their toes it makes it interesting. Great post and thank you for commenting on my post about silly pugs.
I met a woman at a casino who looked like a grizzled mountain woman, all flannel and blue jeans, who looked like she was putting her last social security dollar into a slot machine. It turned out that she has a doctorate in nuclear physics, works out of her home in the mountains and spends winters at her second home in Honduras. It is a mistake to put women into a certain box.
I got thrown off by your recent comment on my blog ... I was like "who is this Scarlett?" HAHA!
I think every woman should have multiple sides ...the brilliant side, the kick ass side and the girly side. I need to work on the kick ass side of me though.
One of the best things about being a woman, I think, is being able to do the unexpected.
We are endlessly interesting, that's what I think.
Okay, I thought you were talking about an actual Barbie doll. You know, Barbie with an assortment of army fatigues in seasonal colour schemes. An army beauty queen is far less offensive.
Ha! Sort of like Computer Engineer Barbie, scheduled to hit the shelves soon. Maybe she'll have a pocket protector on her miniskirt. =>
Me too! I try not to judge a book by it's cover and I try to remember that same rule when dealing with people.
I'm a healer/sales rep doubling as a cashier.

I loved your post and what you said about women. That's a wonderful line about girls who keep "stereotypes on their toes."
I think the "typical woman" doesn't really exist and perhaps she never did. Women have been doing what wasn't expected of them for ages.
Hopefully, we will continue to do the unexpected of us:~)
First... I don't know how the British Army feels... but imnsho, if you're going to wear the uniform, wear it correctly. I have no problem with her bring a beauty queen and a soldier... just don't be a beauty queen at the exact same time. But then again that's just a former Army officer talking.
Second... There was a US soldier who also was a beauty queen... SGT Jill Stevens won Miss Utah in 2008... She made it to the finals of the Miss USA as the "America's Choice", but was eliminated after the swimsuit competition.
