Naked With A Chance for Snow

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

On my last post, several comments suggested introducing quiet time now that my son stopped napping.

I have tried it, but things haven't gone smoothly.

Exhibit A: I heard my son yelling "wheeeee!" and a big thump over the monitor so I decided I better check out what was going on during "quiet" time.

He was riding his big wheel off his bed.

Exhibit B: After about a 15 minutes of suspiciously quiet time, I decided I better check on him.

He was dancing to his music, completely naked. I could handle this, but he's not potty trained and likes to pee on the floor. Luckily, the worst thing on the floor was pee.

Prior to this, I didn't even know he could take his clothes off by himself. Definitely noted.

Exhibit C: My son happily stayed in his room for an entire half hour. I timed it so that his quiet time coincided with the baby's nap. Basically I was feeling like a rock star and was giving myself all kinds of mental pats on the back.

Then I heard over the monitor "Mommy, it's snowing."

He had emptied an enormous brand new bottle of baby powder all over his room. (And gotten naked for good measure.)

Baby powder was everywhere. He was absolutely covered in it. His hair was entirely white.

He had opened his dresser drawers, sprinkled it in his closet, all over his bed, on every toy....you get the picture. It honestly looked like it had snowed.

I'm still not sure how he got the powder because it was up high on a shelf on the wall. Based on the trail of baby powder footprints going up his bookshelf, he must also be perfecting his spider man moves.

So I'm letting go of the dream of quiet time in his room.

The new routine is to for him to play quietly by himself in the living room after lunch so I get a few things done and can keep visual contact on him. So far it's working well and I haven't had any disasters.

At least my wild little man keeps things exciting!

P.S. I want to thank Just Making Our Way for this:

OMG...first, I dread losing naps. Second, the powder thing is hysterical (for an outsider...not so much for you). I guess it takes Moms a little while to really accept that their solace is being taken away. Hang in there!

You're making me think about taking baby-proofing to a whole new level. Ack.

Snowing baby powder. I love it!

You've got to admit that he is very inventive when it comes to entertaining himself. I hope the new routine works a little better, with maybe a little less excitement.

okay, I had to laugh about the big wheel going off the bed and the baby powder and the dancing naked. Oh well, it was worth a try and don't give up on it. Perhaps in a few months he will enjoy that quiet time in his room without causing such a ruckus. Seems like you worked out a good solution for the time being to give yourself some time to get things done while your baby naps.

enjoy the day :)

Wow... that is... spectacular...

The only thing I can really say is... try not to kill the kid when he takes off the poopy diaper...

I hope you took pictures!

At least it's a story you'll laugh at later... like 15 years later.

Enbrace these moments. They sure beat the moments where you're teaching them how to drive a car. I should know.

Hugs!!

I'm sorry I'm laughing so hard at the snow thing - because I can imagine it was a huge bitch to clean up...but that's pretty hilarious.

Quiet in our house usually means someone is getting into trouble!

Oh NO! Sounds like you've had an exciting day!

Oh My! Baby powder in the closet scared me. Hugs, sweetie. Hugs. I like that the new plan works well.

I think you need to write a book. I have said to C that if we all had boys first we may not have such a large population growth...all that fun in such a little body LOL!

I hope you did get some quiet time...

Great post...nice award, much deserved.

You've got a creative genius (weatherman?) on your hands. We have "quiet time" around here, too, for my oldest, and I've learned (the hard way!) to strip her room of anything that might lead to a little too much adventure during said quiet time. Also, my pediatrician's fix for stripper children? Duct tape. On diaper flaps, zippers, snaps, etc. Works like a champ (most days). Good luck with Toddler vs. Mommy, the never-ending battle of wits! =>

Wow! You got an active one on your hands. Perhaps quiet time should also include restraints?? HAHA!

Oh my! LOL (I laugh with you, not at you! (O: ) They can be such little stinkers worth every extra bit of effort they cause us!

Maybe quiet time on the couch, so you can still read or have some down time, but he has to lie down?

Kids are so ingenious! And let him go naked and enjoy the feeling...

Oh this was rich! I'm laughing and feeling all sad for you because I'm guessing you're the one cleaning up that powder. Hope it's unscented.

that was absolutely hilarious!
